Needs Statement

Abnormalities of platelet number can represent clinically insignificant laboratory artifacts or acutely life-threatening disease, and all points in between..  Through this activity, the participant will be able to recognize the common thrombocytopenia and thrombocytosis syndromes, initiate evaluation and treatment, and distinguish those which can be managed in the primary care setting from those which require prompt triage to a specialist.

  1. Outline the diagnosis and initial managmenet of common syndromes;
  2. Review ITP, DIC, TTP, platelet underproduction thrombocytosis.
